Our shop moved from Calgary out to Strathmore in 2013, but the work never went anywhere. Calgary homes still account for the large majority of what we do every week, and they have for more than two decades.
Bathtub refinishing goes by a few names. You may see it called bathtub reglazing, bathtub resurfacing, or porcelain tub refinishing. It is all the same process, and it is the work we have done in Calgary bathrooms for over 24 years.
We Know Calgary Bathrooms
Calgary's housing types vary enormously from one community to the next, and so do the bathtubs. After 24 years working across the city, we can usually tell what we are walking into before we arrive.
Inner-City and Character Homes
Hillhurst, Sunnyside, Bridgeland, Inglewood, Ramsay, Mount Royal, Elbow Park, Scarboro, Crescent Heights.
Calgary's older neighbourhoods are full of porcelain enamel over cast iron tubs. They are heavy, well built, and almost always worth restoring rather than tearing out. These are also the homes where replacement gets expensive quickly, because removing a cast iron tub usually means cutting out tile and sometimes part of a wall to get it out of the room.
This is where we find genuine clawfoot tubs as well. We refinish the interior, exterior, as well as the claw feet.
East and Northeast Calgary
Forest Lawn, Forest Heights, Radisson Heights, Dover, Rundle, Whitehorn, Temple, Pineridge.
We come into Calgary from the east, which makes these communities some of the easiest for us to reach and schedule. A lot of the housing here dates from the 1950s through the 1970s, and the original tubs are often still in place. Cast iron with worn or dated enamel is common, and so are the colours that came with it.
If you are in east or northeast Calgary, we are likely closer to you than most refinishers working out of the south or west sides of the city.
Established South and Southwest Communities
Acadia, Willow Park, Haysboro, Kingsland, Fairview, Glendale, Glamorgan, Lakeview, Bowness, Montgomery, Thorncliffe.
Homes built through the 1950s, 60s, and 70s often still have their original bathrooms. Structurally these tubs are frequently in good shape. It is the colour that has dated. Avocado green, harvest gold, pink, and pale blue are all still out there across Calgary, and every one of them can go to a clean modern white in a day or two.
Colour change is one of the most common requests we get from these communities.
Northwest Calgary
Brentwood, Charleswood, Varsity, Huntington Hills, Silver Springs, Ranchlands.
Similar vintage to the communities above, with the same mix of solid original tubs carrying finishes that have simply had enough years on them. Refinishing suits these homes well because the tubs themselves are usually worth keeping.
Newer Communities
Edgemont, Royal Oak, Tuscany, Citadel, Hidden Valley, Cranston, Auburn Bay, Mahogany, Evanston, Sundance, Nolan Hill, Legacy, Walden, Seton, Redstone, Chaparral.
Calgary homes built from the 1980s onward lean toward fiberglass and acrylic rather than cast iron, including a lot of jetted tubs and deep soakers. The problems are different here. Instead of worn enamel, we see stress cracks from flexing, chips from dropped objects, holes, and surfaces that have gone dull.
A crack in a fiberglass tub floor matters more than it looks. Left alone, water works its way underneath and causes damage that costs considerably more to fix than the original repair would have.
Condos, Apartments, and Rental Units

Condo work carries its own considerations. Elevator booking, parking, building access hours, and neighbours all have to be planned in advance. Our technicians have the experience to work within those constraints.

The Cecil Hotel Clawfoot
One of the more memorable pieces we have restored was a 1911 cast iron clawfoot tub removed from the Cecil Hotel, a building that carried a lot of Calgary's history. When our customer brought it into our shop it was in pretty rough shape. We went through our robust cleaning and etching process and did the necessary repairs. The end result was a tub over a hundred years old that now looked like a brand new show piece.
Why we bring this up is because of what it says about this type of work and how important it is to preserve pieces of history. A tub built in 1911 was still worth restoring more than a century later. Most tubs we are called out to look at are considerably younger and in a lot better condition.

Most Calgary bathtub refinishing jobs run between $600 and $900. The final price depends on the general condition of the tub, type of tub, repairs needed, and whether you want a colour change.
Full replacement is completely different and comes at a higher cost. Once you include the new tub, demolition, plumbing, and retiling, a straightforward replacement usually runs $3,000 to $5,000 and takes several days, with the bathroom out of service throughout.
